Drewry Secondary School choir, along with 8 talented Music students from AY Jackson S.S. performed a festive themed performance at the Legislative Building at Queen’s Park. The event was attended by David Zimmer, the MPP for Willowdale, TDSB Trustees, as well as parents, students and school staff.  The performance that took place on the Grand stairwell at Queen’s Park is a great accomplishment for the students whom were selected among many other school choirs across the Province. The choir rehearses regularly to prepare a 30-minute program of festive music with a diverse range of songs added to their repertoire and the students excelled with flying colours.

With every Drewry performance, the students’ joy and passion touch all who attend. The choir consists of the singers as well as the students who are mostly non-verbal that provide creative imagery to compliment the music.  All of the images are created by the very dedicated and outstanding educational assistant, Jennifer Morgan. They are the perfect compliment to the beautiful singing voices.  It is a privilege for Drewry staff and students to have such an opportunity to showcase their hard work in preparing for this event.

Drewry’s music program has an extensive history. The program was initiated and is still currently run by Ms. Hrycak, a dynamic and brilliantly creative teacher. Within the second year of the program, Ms. Hrycak was approached by the Ontario Educators Society to write an article that was published in the “Recorder”.  Ms Hrycak’s determination and unrelenting passion for music has inspired her music students to achieve beyond any boundaries, embodying the true essence of the term, “student success”. The wide variety of music offered through this program has allowed students to improve on their attention span when working on tasks. These are transferable components that have benefitted performance in all the other subject areas the students are involved in. The music program offers extracurricular activities such as the drumming ensemble and the choir -- activities that give students an alternative outlet for expressing themselves.  In addition to performing at school assemblies, the choir has also performed at Centrepoint Mall, Cummer Lodge, Cummer Avenue United Church and Toronto Center for the Arts as well as many other TDSB events.  Drewry SS is very proud to have such an outstanding group of students and committed staff.
