The students of John Polanyi CI received a valuable lesson in international business this past August. As the winners of the Students for the Advancement of Global Achievement (SAGE) National competition within the Social Enterprise Business (SEB) Category in May, they had the opportunity of a lifetime in competing at the World Cup event in Moscow, Russia.
SAGE connects secondary school students with university and college students, business leaders and civic leaders to promote youth entrepreneurship and community service. Economic opportunities are encouraged in the context of ethical business practices, social responsibility, civic engagement and environmental awareness.
SAGE delegations from 19 different countries attended this event, which included an opening ceremony, a tour around the city, a cultural showcase, a final gala and, of course, the competition. Teams had an opportunity to present their work and initiatives in front of panels lead by judges from all over the world.
The team from JPCI impressed the judges with the amount and quality of work performed in the Toronto community around the themes of Aboriginal education and awareness, improving food security and raising funds for victims of child abuse.
Student Mega P was ecstatic with the experience. “I can’t explain how much it meant to be a part of this amazing journey.”
Teacher Rahim Essabhai agreed, adding “there are no words to describe the emotion felt when witnessing real change and learning in our youth through these life-altering experiential events, which ultimately means real positivity for our global community for the future.”
