Polanyi wins UCC basketball tournament in dramatic fashion

Polanyi wins UCC basketball tournament in dramatic fashion

It was as a thrilling a victory as the John Polanyi CI Jaguars’ senior boys basketball team has ever had. The short-manned team surprised everyone but themselves when they won the Upper Canada College invitational in a heart-stopper February 1 against the host team. And just to add a little more drama to the game, they won it in overtime on a last-second shot.

Down by 2 with 6 seconds left in OT, the weary Jags took a timeout. They caught their breath, composed themselves and drew up the play they wanted. When play resumed, the Jags ran a give and go to set up Haroun Mohammed, who launched a long contested shot that seemed to stay in the air an eternity as the everyone in the gym held their collective breath to watch. When it did come down, it found nothing but net: a three-point buzzer beater. The hometown crowd was stunned. Against all odds, the John Polanyi team had snatched victory from what seemed like sure defeat.

Coach Tyler Robinson called the effort nothing short of amazing. “I’m so proud of all these guys,” he said. “We had a shaky start (to the season), but an epic, Hollywood-box-office-kind of finish.”

Former Toronto Raptors General Manager Brian Colangelo, whose son was playing for tournament favourite UCC, presented the tournament trophy and congratulated the players on a thrilling game.
