Easing Overcrowding in Yonge-Sheppard Corridor

Thursday, May 04, 2017
Categories: News Releases

To help meet the needs of the growing community in the Yonge-Sheppard corridor, the Toronto District School Board, with the help of the Ministry of Education, will be increasing the size of Avondale Public School and Avondale Alternative Elementary School.

Thanks to a $6 million dollar investment from the Ministry of Education, a further 322 student spaces will be added to the school through the construction of a third storey. This will bring the total number of student spaces to 875.

The new school, which is currently under construction and scheduled to open during the 2018/2019 school year, will also include a 62-space child care centre, funded by the Government of Ontario and City of Toronto.

QUICK FACTS

• In April 2014, the TDSB received approval from the Ministry of Education to build the new Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 school that will replace the existing Avondale Public School and Avondale Elementary Alternative School building.
• The TDSB, Government of Ontario and City of Toronto are providing a total of $23.4 million for this project.
• Since 2004, approximately 17,900 new residential units have been built in the Yonge-Sheppard corridor, generating nearly 1,000 additional students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12.

“I welcome the additional funding provided by the Ministry of Education, which supports families in Willowdale. This funding recognizes the accommodation challenges faced by our schools due to intense residential development in the area. I look forward to working with the province and City on implementing long-term solutions that will allow the TDSB to tackle increasing enrollment pressures.”

-Alexander Brown, TDSB Trustee, Ward 12, Willowdale

“I’m thrilled to support this project, which means additional student and child care spaces for families in Willowdale. By providing high quality learning and child care environments, we are preparing our youngest Ontarians with the best opportunity for future success.”

-David Zimmer, MPP Willowdale
