Building a Positive School Climate

Message from the Director of Education John Malloy

As a follow up to my message last Friday regarding recent incidents of racism and hate in our city, I have shared resources with staff and reminded them of the critical role that they play in supporting equity and inclusion in our schools and classrooms. I have encouraged staff to use their experience and resources to support schools to challenge bias, embed equity into every classroom, and ensure a positive school climate each day in every TDSB school.

As part of our Vision for Learning and Integrated Equity Framework, our staff are committed to this work because we know that equity and inclusion are the essential foundation of educational excellence, well-being and student achievement. Our staff understand that they are critical to building positive school climates, supporting meaningful engagement, ensuring acceptance for every student, and allowing all students to achieve to their full potential.

We also recognize that equity does not mean treating all students in the same way, but rather, responding to the individual needs of each student by providing the conditions and interventions necessary to help that student succeed. It means identifying the barriers that individual students face and eliminating these through education, evaluation and action. It means creating a sense of belonging and acceptance for all students by celebrating their collective diversity as shared strengths.

As parents and guardians, I also encourage you to speak with your child about equity and inclusion. Below are some resources you may find helpful:

Equity and Inclusive Schools – here you will find information about diversity and helping all students and parents feel welcomed and accepted in our schools.

Gender-Based Violence Prevention – here you will find information about healthy relationships and caring and safe school environments.

Aboriginal Education – here you will find information about Aboriginal perspectives.

Promoting a Positive School Climate – here you will find information from the Ministry of Education about promoting a positive school climate.
