Rose Avenue Public School is a vibrant downtown inner-city school located in the centre of St. James Town near the corner of Parliament and Bloor Street.
Our student population is drawn from the 22 apartment towers, housing over 27,000 people, surrounding our school within a 32 sq. acre (one quarter square kilometre) city block. It is held to be one of the most densely populated communities in North America.
We celebrated our 125th anniversary this year with an exciting gathering of former staff, students and community members. The rich history and supportive environment has ensured that thousands of students have achieved tremendous things having begun their schooling at Rose Ave. Public School.
Our School Community Working Together
Given the diversity of our school community, Rose Ave. school puts a strong emphasis on the school and community working together for the success of our students both academically and socially. The staff, students and parents represent about fifty different language groups. Our community has a history of working together to support the success of every student in the school. We have a strong School Council, committed experienced teachers and children who are learning to be responsible students through active participation in a number of areas.
Student Learning and Achievement
Our School Plan supports the TDSB's mandate of providing a strong literacy and numeracy focus, as well as a safe and nurturing environment for our students. The entire staff is working to make sure that our students succeed academically. We have a clear and consistent monitoring of our students' progress; our instruction is based on the needs of our learners and everyone is given opportunities to learn both inside and outside the classroom. Students' activities strive to be intellectually demanding and engaging. Our students are expected to think in their classrooms, ask questions and interact positively with each other.
Social Justice and Equity
Our school is a place which values the history and culture of all students in the school. We are committed to focusing on social justice. We use an inclusionary curriculum. We have monthly themes set out in assemblies, drama in our classrooms to further develop empathy skills, and we promote a careful look at the roles of responsibility and community citizenship.
Platinum Eco- School
Rose Ave. staff and students have attained the highest level of eco-school status by working hard to use what we have learned to help to conserve energy, reduce and recycle our waste and support eco-literacy amoung our students. Part of our eco-programme involves our school garden which we are able to work in partnership with the community to harvest vegetables and herbs.
Safe and Caring School Community
We continue to ensure the provision of a safe learning environment for our students. With the support of the School Council, the Leadership Team, and the TDSB Safe and Caring Schools committee, Rose Ave. Public School is a place where staff and students feel secure and able to learn.
Focus on the Early Years
With over 175 kindergarten students in our school, we continue to actively structure an early years programme that is developmentally appropriate, with high expectations for our students and with a partnership between staff, parents and the community. We have a large on-site child care centre operated by George Brown College and a vibrant Parent and Family Literacy Centre.
