Norway Junior School is one of the oldest schools in the Toronto District School Board. Its existence can be traced back to a rural schoolhouse built in 1848. This school was the first to be built in the "Beach" and since then, it has been serving the educational needs of this area which is known for its strong sense of family and community. The current building was opened in April 1977. We celebrated our 100th anniversary in 1996.
The school 's enrolment was 274 students in October 2009. We provide Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6 including Special Education programs.
PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT
You are your child’s first and most important teacher. Being involved in your child’s education, both at home and at school, greatly improves his or her chances for success.
Our school functions as a team - parents, families, students, teachers, support staff and community - working together for excellence in education. Together we can provide your child with the richest experiences.

More importantly, home-school communication is the key to helping your child navigate the many challenges he or she will face in the coming years.
SCHOOL FOCUS
At Norway, we will continue to focus on literacy and numeracy skills. Through the Teaching-Learning Critical Pathways we will be providing resources to our classrooms and assisting our teachers in selecting the instructional strategies that best suit the needs of our students.
Teachers will use effective assessment strategies such as EDI (Kindergarten), DRA (Primary) and CASI (Junior) to assess students' strengths and areas for improvement. The staff will continue to analyze the data that is available to us to improve student success within our school. All staff will continue to attend Professional Development activities.
SPECIAL EDUCATION
A variety of special education programs and services are offered to meet the needs of all students, including students with exceptionalities.
At Norway, there are three types of Special Education programs:
a Communications class, an in-school Home School Program and a Resource Program.
THE ARTS
We have very active music and drama programs. This year we are fortunate to have a permanent music teacher and also an itinerant music instructor who comes in once a week to teach recorder to the Junior students. We have two choirs - Primary and Junior. Each year the choirs are involved in a Winter Concert and a Spring Play.
ATHLETICS
Sports have always been an integral part of Norway. Throughout its history, we have won many awards in all areas of sports. Everyone is encouraged to participate in all activities, both in class and in the numerous extra-curricular programmes. We are proud to be a part of theToronto Schools On The Move.
SAFE AND CARING SCHOOLS
We aim to foster respect for each other through team building and cooperation in class, sports teams, choirs, clubs. We continue to use our character education program to foster a positve school climate. Students are encouraged to solve problems through peaceful resolution and respectful discussion.
