Highland Heights Junior Public School (Gr JK - 6)

Our motto is "Strong Together".
Highland Heights Junior Public School is a Kindergarten to Grade 6 school of approximately 260 students in the Birchmount and Finch area of Scarborough. The school opened in 1966. Our parents/guardians are an integral part of the Highland Heights community and are frequent volunteers in the school. In partnership with parents and the community, we put students first. Our children develop through meaningful and challenging experiences that foster self-esteem and celebrate individuality. We provide a safe, caring and inclusive climate for learning, which celebrates diversity and acknowledges the rights and dignity of all.
Parenting Centre
The Parenting and Family Literacy Centre is for parents and their children, aged birth to six years. The parent/caregiver stays with the child at all times. The Centre helps to prepare children for school and encourage families to be a part of their children's learning. Families also have the chance to spend time with other families. Our coordinator provides invaluable information and guest speakers are invited to attend. Parents with their children are invited to come to the centre at any time during the scheduled hours and no pre-registration is required.
Our Mission
Our Code of Conduct
Highland Heights is committed to providing a healthy learning and working environment by promoting respect, civility, safety, responsible citizenship and academic excellence. Our Code of Conduct reflects the values and expectations of the Highland Heights community.
Co-curricular Activities
We believe that learning is not confined to the classroom alone. Therefore, each student is encouraged to actively participate in co-curricular activities. Teachers can assist students in selecting activities. We are proud of our extensive programme of extra-curricular activities which includes sports, crafts, drama, arts and philanthropic activities.
Curriculum
We teach the Ontario Curriculum which specifies what children should achieve. We recognize that children learn in different ways so we teach in a range of groupings and styles to promote knowledge, understanding and skills. We create a learning environment and culture which supports learning, builds children’s self esteem and engenders a positive attitude to learning.
Parental Involvement
We recognize parents as the first educators of all children. We know that, if parents and teachers communicate well and share their expertise and knowledge, children will always benefit. We encourage parents to become as involved in school life as they can. A number of parents help in school during the day and we welcome and appreciate their contributions.
