East York Alternative is school community that supports student learning and growth with mutual respect and commitment to democratic ideals. The school culture encourages critical thought and engaged citizenship on a range of pathways for future success. Our practices are rooted in creative exploration, intellectual play and a relevant interpretation of curriculum. Students and staff promote progressive values, open dialogue, care and mutual support. We encourage students to value responsibility, self-reflection, personal growth and pride in achievement.
The Alternative School Choice at EYA
East York Alternative School is a school of choice. There is no geographic boundary. Students from all across Toronto are welcome to submit an application. The application process is the way to determine if there is suitable program for the student and the match of the student to the program offerings and expectations of the school.
East York Alternative offers all the typical academic courses you would expect to see in the regular secondary schools. The delivery and differentiation of the instruction are more varied in the alternative school environment.

Our school community is drawn from over 30 different schools. In an effort to build friendships and draw the students closer together we participate in a number of events as a school.. Students have raised money for Pennies for Patients (Leukemia and Lymphoma Society), the Terry Fox Run and Haiti Relief. Breast Cancer Awareness Month, The December 6th Campaign to End Violence Against Women and the Coming Together Campaign are other examples of events and initiatives taken up by the students at East York Alternative. These events and events like our fund raiser car washes serve the East York community and grow the EYA sense of community. Read more about Our School Community and Serving Our Community
