Our School Improvement Plan


Literacy


Our goal is to increase student success on the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test and increase credit attainment in English classes; while encouraging a life-long interest in reading for recreation and information.

Strategies & Action Plan: 

 

  •  Infuse literacy development strategies across the curriculum through increased opportunities for interdisciplinary, project-based, team teaching.

 

  • Establish a resource lab supported by our itinerant resource teacher to support students in literacy development with necessary technological and pedagogical resources. 

 

  • Invest in new, relevant and culturally responsive reading materials, Newspaper & Magazine Subscriptions and SMART Board Interactive Whiteboards.

Numeracy


Our Goal is to increase credit attainment across the Math curriculum, develop a more relevant and engaging Math program; while de-escalating students’ anxiety about numeracy and mathematics.

Strategies & Action Plan: 

 

  •  Infuse numeracy development strategies across the curriculum through increased opportunities for interdisciplinary, project-based, team teaching.

 

  • Create assessment and evaluation tools that differ from traditional paper/pencil tests and quizzes in order to allow students to demonstrate their learning in new ways while emphasizing the applicability of mathematics associated with different careers and opportunities.

 

  • Invest in Teacher training to enhance inter-disciplinary efforts to highlight Math relevance

Pathways


Our goal is to increase the rate of graduation and overall credit attainment at EYA while diversifying student experience through relevant pedagogy, Cooperative Education and Dual Credit courses.

Strategies & Action Plan:
 

  • Increase student opportunities for interdisciplinary, project-based, team taught activities rooted in relevant, real-life challenges.
     
  • Increase student exposure to a variety of careers and other opportunities through integration of community mentors into school activities 
     
  • Improve student success support network by instituting ‘Houses’ (Teacher Mentor groups) to better track student attendance, work completion and social integration; while facilitating student access to support services.

Community, Culture & Caring


Our goal is to foster a safe school where students feel supported, welcome and engaged in meaningful educational goals; while building stronger ties between parents, businesses, community members with the school community.

Strategies & Action Plan:

  • Improve student success support network by instituting ‘Houses,’  Students will join a ‘House’ at the beginning of their career at EYA and maintain their membership until graduation – providing a stable on-going connection to peers and teacher mentors.
  • Provide meaningful, long-term, sustainable mental health support for students.
  • Incorporate Restorative Practices into the regular program at EYA.

  • Increase parent involvement through the revitalization of the EYA Community Council.
