Education Week - Thursday, May 4, 2017
Each year the Toronto District School Board looks forward to the Spring Festival Concert, an annual tradition showcasing music education programs from elementary schools across the district. From the very beginning, the Spring Festival Concert has celebrated the importance of music programs in public education with at least one thousand children performing. Organized by the TDSB Music Department, this evening highlights the wide range of diverse music education programs in our schools and our wonderfully talented students. It is truly incredible that the concert has continued to grow and thrive over the past 131 years.
One of the very first concerts was performed at the Caledonia Curling Club Rink. It then moved to the newly-built Massey Hall in 1894 and to Roy Thomson Hall for many years when it was first built. The concert moved back to Massey Hall in 2001 and has remained at this incredible venue since that time.
The Spring Festival Concert has continued to change and evolve over the years. In the very beginning, the performances featured schools singing songs such as “The Maple Leaf Forever” which was performed in 1892 in front of its composer, Alexander Muir, who was the Principal of Gladstone Avenue Public School at the time.
In its 131st year, we are so proud to have over a thousand elementary students participating in the show, including performances of solo and massed works by choirs, bands, steelpan, Indian Percussion, Korean Drumming, First Nations School Drumming and Dancing Ensemble and orchestra.
